The Mexican woman who is chief information officer for retailer Walmart Latin America was honored March 31 by the Hispanic Information Technology Executive Council known as HITEC. 

Maria del Carmen Valencia was named one of the Top 50 Technology Executives in Latin America by the HITEC group in their inaugural edition of the award presented at a Miami Beach hotel. 

"This award is not only a great testament to the many contributions women executives are bringing to the technology field in Latin America, but to our company's commitment to promoting diversity and driving innovation in the region," Valencia said in a statement.

A nearly 24-year veteran in information technology, Valencia joined Walmart de Mexico in 1987. She has held numerous top posts with the company and now is senior vice president and CIO for Latin America. She was the founder and president of the Gender Equity and Inclusion Council at Walmart Mexico.

Walmart has more than 3,300 stores and more than 350,000 associates in Latin America. It runs its Latin American operations from Miami.

Worldwide, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has more than 8,900 stores in 15 countries and posted fiscal year 2011 sales of $419 billion.
