Afghanistan’s trade rose to $2,938,504,807 through December

Afghanistan’s trade with the United States rose to $2,938,504,807 through the first 12 months of 2011, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 31.34 percent above its total trade during the same time period last year. Afghanistan’s exports increased 35.59 percent while imports dropped -76.32 percent. The U.S. surplus with Afghanistan was $2,898,325,439.

Through December, Afghanistan’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 Baltimore, No. 2 Norfolk, No. 3 Jacksonville/Tampa, No. 4 Cleveland and No. 5 New York City compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Charleston, No. 2 New York City, No. 3 New Orleans, No. 4 Cleveland and No. 5 Jacksonville/Tampa. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 55.62 percent of Afghanistan’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 18.48 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Afghanistan,:

Through December, 34 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Afghanistan while 3 had deficits. That compares with 36 surpluses and 2 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with Baltimore at $911,035,776, the largest deficit was with Ogdensburg, N.Y. at $-272,300.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $3,687,481,148,857, up 15.61 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 6.37 percent to $203,048,192,676; imports rose 9.24 percent to $294,837,399,059. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, China, Mexico, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-726,376,899,731, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-634,587,693,348.

The top five U.S. exports to Afghanistan by value through December were cranes, derricks, industrial-use vehicles; medical instrument parts; aircraft; aircraft parts; and landline, cellular phone equipment, respectively. They accounted for 65.16 percent of total exports to Afghanistan.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Afghanistan -- salvage; carpets, othert textile floor coverings, knotted; plants for pharmacy, perfume, insecticides; imports of returned exports; and carpets & oth text floor cover, woven, no tuf 5702 -- accounted for 88.21 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to Afghanistan:

In the latest annual figures available, Afghanistan recorded $2,237,290,527 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were Charleston, New York City, New Orleans, Cleveland and Jacksonville/Tampa. Total U.S. exports to Afghanistan were $2,152,447,631 and imports from Afghanistan were $84,842,896. The U.S. surplus with Afghanistan was $2,067,604,735.
