Australia’s trade rose to $8,353,972,727 through March

Australia’s trade with the United States rose to $8,353,972,727 through the first three months of 2013, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s -15.01 percent below its total trade during the same time period last year. Australia’s exports decreased -18.31 percent while imports dropped -3.98 percent. The U.S. deficit with Australia was $0.

Through March, Australia’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 Los Angeles, No. 2 Atlanta/Savannah, No. 3 New York City, No. 4 San Francisco and No. 5 Philadelphia compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Los Angeles, No. 2 Atlanta/Savannah, No. 3 New York City, No. 4 Honolulu and No. 5 Philadelphia. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 85.36 percent of Australia’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 118.10 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Australia,:

  • Trade with No. 1 Los Angeles fell -3.75 percent to $2,283,904,148.
    Exports fell -4.76 percent to $1,951,971,150. Imports rose 2.62 percent to $331,932,998.
  • Trade with No. 2 Atlanta/savannah fell -60.72 percent to $644,057,163.
    Exports fell -63.05 percent to $549,472,760. Imports fell -38.13 percent to $94,584,403.

Through March, 30 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Australia while 15 had deficits. That compares with 29 surpluses and 14 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with Los Angeles at $1,620,038,152, the largest deficit was with Philadelphia at $-164,309,969.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world decreased to $919,560,909,009, down -1.59 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 0.19 percent to $1,773,047,307; imports dropped -1.78 percent to $-16,591,316,281. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, China, Mexico, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit climbed $-152,899,878,555, down compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-171,264,242,143.

The top five U.S. exports to Australia by value through March were low value shipments; motor vehicles for transporting people; medical instruments for surgeons, dentists, vets; aircraft; and tractors, respectively. They accounted for 17.08 percent of total exports to Australia.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Australia -- frozen beef from cows; wine; imports of returned exports; sheep or goat meat, fresh, chilled or frozen; and lead, unwrought -- accounted for 30.49 percent of all inbound shipments.
