France’s trade rose to $17,857,130,070 through March

France’s trade with the United States rose to $17,857,130,070 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 8.55 percent above its total trade during the same time period last year. France’s exports increased 6.30 percent while imports rose 10.26 percent. The U.S. deficit with France was $2,760,544,028.

Through March, France’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 New York City, No. 2 Cleveland, No. 3 Houston, No. 4 Chicago and No. 5 New Orleans compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 New York City, No. 2 Cleveland, No. 3 New Orleans, No. 4 Houston and No. 5 Chicago. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 84.13 percent of France’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 69.63 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with France,:

  • Trade with No. 1 New York City rose 6.39 percent to $3,819,351,649.
    Exports fell -2.61 percent to $1,430,023,878. Imports rose 12.61 percent to $2,389,327,771.
  • Trade with No. 2 Cleveland rose 19.14 percent to $1,822,500,597.
    Exports rose 28.00 percent to $869,718,676. Imports rose 12.05 percent to $952,781,921.
  • Trade with No. 3 Houston rose 7.12 percent to $1,428,519,581.
    Exports fell -0.48 percent to $931,405,493. Imports rose 24.98 percent to $497,114,088.
  • Trade with No. 4 Chicago rose 9.03 percent to $1,314,132,558.
    Exports rose 14.70 percent to $662,712,694. Imports rose 3.81 percent to $651,419,864.
  • Trade with No. 5 New Orleans fell -4.06 percent to $1,313,838,395.
    Exports fell -9.35 percent to $454,845,183. Imports fell -1.01 percent to $858,993,212.

Through March, 12 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with France while 33 had deficits. That compares with 10 surpluses and 35 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with Houston at $434,291,405, the largest deficit was with New York City at $-959,303,893.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to France by value through March were aircraft; oil, not crude; medicine; medical instruments for surgeons, dentists, vets; and low value shipments, respectively. They accounted for 43.65 percent of total exports to France.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from France -- aircraft; aircraft engines, parts; medicine; oil, not crude; and imports of returned exports -- accounted for 38.55 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to France:

  • Aircraft rose 14.53 percent compared to last year to $1,850,202,192.
  • Oil, not crude rose 24.83 percent compared to last year to $732,090,022.
  • Medicine rose 51.52 percent compared to last year to $299,042,868.
  • Medical instruments for surgeons, dentists, vets rose 6.69 percent compared to last year to $217,831,135.
  • Low value shipments fell -6.57 percent compared to last year to $195,993,480.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from France

  • Aircraft rose 52.32 percent compared to last year to $1,145,211,282.
  • Aircraft engines, parts rose 10.78 percent compared to last year to $1,096,517,254.
  • Medicine fell -24.90 percent compared to last year to $683,961,503.
  • Oil, not crude rose 23.73 percent compared to last year to $543,849,376.
  • Imports of returned exports rose 17.45 percent compared to last year to $504,677,568.

In the latest annual figures available, France recorded $16,451,053,518 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were New York City, Cleveland, New Orleans, Chicago and Houston. Total U.S. exports to France were $27,844,315,935 and imports from France were $39,983,421,736. The U.S. deficit with France was $-12,139,105,801.
