Haiti’s trade rose to $414,051,440 through March

Haiti’s trade with the United States rose to $414,051,440 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s -1.86 percent below its total trade during the same time period last year. Haiti’s exports decreased -0.53 percent while imports dropped -4.11 percent. The U.S. surplus with Haiti was $114,185,832.

Through March, Haiti’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 Miami, No. 2 New Orleans, No. 3 Low Value Shipments, No. 4 Jacksonville/Tampa and No. 5 Houston compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Miami, No. 2 New Orleans, No. 3 Houston, No. 4 Low Value Shipments and No. 5 New York City. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 11.67 percent of Haiti’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 13.78 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Haiti,:

  • Trade with No. 1 Miami rose 1.26 percent to $285,818,960.
    Exports rose 6.07 percent to $144,478,326. Imports fell -3.23 percent to $141,340,634.
  • Trade with No. 2 New Orleans fell -7.79 percent to $51,464,218.
    Exports fell -7.90 percent to $51,397,847. Imports rose 986.09 percent to $66,371.
  • Trade with No. 3 Low Value Shipments rose 0.88 percent to $13,227,636.
    Exports rose 0.80 percent to $13,113,238. Imports rose 10.44 percent to $114,398.
  • Trade with No. 4 Jacksonville/tampa fell -12.26 percent to $11,272,765.
    Exports fell -2.46 percent to $10,608,193. Imports fell -66.29 percent to $664,572.
  • Trade with No. 5 Houston fell -45.73 percent to $8,998,722.
    Exports fell -45.70 percent to $8,998,722. Imports fell -100.00 percent to $0.

Through March, 21 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Haiti while 12 had deficits. That compares with 17 surpluses and 14 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with New Orleans at $51,331,476, the largest deficit was with Philadelphia at $-1,949,205.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to Haiti by value through March were exports of charitable items, returned as imports; rice; poultry, fresh, chilled or frozen; wheat, meslin; and low value shipments, respectively. They accounted for 62.50 percent of total exports to Haiti.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Haiti -- t-shirts, tank tops, knit or crocheted; sweaters, pullovers, vest, knit or crocheted; men's or boys' suits, not knit; women's or girls' suits, knit or crocheted; and men's or boys' shirts, not knitted or crocheted -- accounted for 88.36 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to Haiti:

  • Exports of charitable items, returned as imports rose 43.90 percent compared to last year to $79,320,353.
  • Rice fell -18.18 percent compared to last year to $40,997,364.
  • Poultry, fresh, chilled or frozen rose 11.90 percent compared to last year to $17,681,282.
  • Wheat, meslin rose compared to last year to $13,949,816.
  • Low value shipments rose 0.80 percent compared to last year to $13,113,238.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from Haiti

  • T-shirts, tank tops, knit or crocheted fell -4.72 percent compared to last year to $56,433,590.
  • Sweaters, pullovers, vest, knit or crocheted fell -23.65 percent compared to last year to $43,026,140.
  • Men's or boys' suits, not knit rose 59.14 percent compared to last year to $22,790,746.
  • Women's or girls' suits, knit or crocheted fell -23.55 percent compared to last year to $5,957,926.
  • Men's or boys' shirts, not knitted or crocheted rose 31.86 percent compared to last year to $4,275,701.

In the latest annual figures available, Haiti recorded $421,881,622 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were Miami, New Orleans, Houston, New York City and Low Value Shipments. Total U.S. exports to Haiti were $1,061,565,379 and imports from Haiti were $742,082,679. The U.S. surplus with Haiti was $319,482,700.
