Iraq’s trade rose to $3,696,255,335 through March

Iraq’s trade with the United States rose to $3,696,255,335 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s -8.75 percent below its total trade during the same time period last year. Iraq’s exports decreased -41.08 percent while imports dropped -2.07 percent. The U.S. deficit with Iraq was $2,879,017,461.

Through March, Iraq’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 Houston, No. 2 Los Angeles, No. 3 New Orleans, No. 4 Philadelphia and No. 5 Port Arthur, Texas compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Houston, No. 2 New Orleans, No. 3 Los Angeles, No. 4 Port Arthur, Texas and No. 5 Philadelphia. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 14.03 percent of Iraq’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 24.96 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Iraq,:

  • Trade with No. 1 Houston rose 5.84 percent to $1,253,208,181.
    Exports fell -30.69 percent to $131,232,219. Imports rose 12.80 percent to $1,121,975,962.
  • Trade with No. 2 Los Angeles rose 14.68 percent to $722,154,543.
    Exports fell -35.34 percent to $3,944,846. Imports rose 15.17 percent to $718,209,697.
  • Trade with No. 3 New Orleans fell -50.87 percent to $466,894,610.
    Exports fell -96.55 percent to $1,507,512. Imports fell -48.67 percent to $465,387,098.
  • Trade with No. 4 Philadelphia rose 39.15 percent to $435,079,059.
    Exports fell -69.30 percent to $4,877,702. Imports rose 44.96 percent to $430,201,357.
  • Trade with No. 5 Port Arthur, Texas fell -24.92 percent to $364,230,127.
    Exports rose to $160,032. Imports fell -24.95 percent to $364,070,095.

Through March, 22 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Iraq while 8 had deficits. That compares with 26 surpluses and 7 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with Charleston at $83,347,233, the largest deficit was with Houston at $-990,743,743.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to Iraq by value through March were aircraft engines, parts; cranes, derricks, industrial-use vehicles; motor vehicles for transporting people; machinery for heating and sterilizing; and poultry, fresh, chilled or frozen, respectively. They accounted for 48.04 percent of total exports to Iraq.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Iraq -- oil; oil, not crude; imports of returned exports; antiques; and unused postage, check forms, bank notes, stock cer -- accounted for 100.00 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to Iraq:

  • Aircraft engines, parts fell -37.00 percent compared to last year to $86,808,030.
  • Cranes, derricks, industrial-use vehicles rose 294.85 percent compared to last year to $29,842,096.
  • Motor vehicles for transporting people fell -32.75 percent compared to last year to $28,342,252.
  • Machinery for heating and sterilizing rose 4,106.65 percent compared to last year to $27,807,250.
  • Poultry, fresh, chilled or frozen rose 11.57 percent compared to last year to $23,489,135.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from Iraq

  • Oil fell -2.11 percent compared to last year to $3,282,623,902.
  • Oil, not crude rose compared to last year to $3,179,679.
  • Imports of returned exports rose 59.28 percent compared to last year to $825,000.
  • Antiques fell -37.04 percent compared to last year to $500,000.
  • Unused postage, check forms, bank notes, stock cer fell -72.85 percent compared to last year to $436,500.

In the latest annual figures available, Iraq recorded $4,050,714,447 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Port Arthur, Texas and Philadelphia. Total U.S. exports to Iraq were $2,431,158,710 and imports from Iraq were $16,955,640,851. The U.S. deficit with Iraq was $-14,524,482,141.
