Iraq’s trade rose to $4,547,523,496 through March

Iraq’s trade with the United States rose to $4,547,523,496 through the first three months of 2013, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 23.03 percent above its total trade during the same time period last year. Iraq’s exports decreased -8.29 percent while imports rose 26.92 percent. The U.S. deficit with Iraq was $0.

Through March, Iraq’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 Houston, No. 2 Los Angeles, No. 3 New Orleans, No. 4 Philadelphia and No. 5 San Francisco compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Houston, No. 2 Los Angeles, No. 3 New Orleans, No. 4 Philadelphia and No. 5 Port Arthur, Texas. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 9.89 percent of Iraq’s U.S. trade.. That compares to -10.68 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Iraq,:

  • Trade with No. 1 Houston rose 41.74 percent to $1,776,249,500.
    Exports rose 12.52 percent to $147,663,058. Imports rose 45.15 percent to $1,628,586,442.

  • Trade with No. 5 San Francisco rose 20.60 percent to $215,012,561.
    Exports fell -83.16 percent to $664,731. Imports rose 22.95 percent to $214,347,830.

Through March, 24 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Iraq while 7 had deficits. That compares with 22 surpluses and 8 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with New York City at $52,987,322, the largest deficit was with Houston at $-1,480,923,384.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world decreased to $919,560,909,009, down -1.59 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 0.19 percent to $1,773,047,307; imports dropped -1.78 percent to $-16,591,316,281. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, China, Mexico, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit climbed $-152,899,878,555, down compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-171,264,242,143.

The top five U.S. exports to Iraq by value through March were motor vehicles for transporting people; poultry, fresh, chilled or frozen; parts for heavy machinery; electronic integrated circuits; and meteorological, hydaulic and survey equipment, respectively. They accounted for 37.73 percent of total exports to Iraq.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Iraq -- oil; vegetable extracts, pectates, agar, etc.; unused postage, check forms, bank notes, stock cer; oil, not crude; and antiques -- accounted for 100.00 percent of all inbound shipments.
