Japan’s trade rose to $54,762,867,594 through March

Japan’s trade with the United States rose to $54,762,867,594 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 13.09 percent above its total trade during the same time period last year. Japan’s exports increased 7.12 percent while imports rose 16.05 percent. The U.S. deficit with Japan was $20,328,636,772.

Through March, Japan’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 Los Angeles, No. 2 New York City, No. 3 Chicago, No. 4 San Francisco and No. 5 Seattle compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Los Angeles, No. 2 New York City, No. 3 San Francisco, No. 4 Chicago and No. 5 Seattle. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 82.39 percent of Japan’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 61.28 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Japan,:

  • Trade with No. 1 Los Angeles rose 9.77 percent to $11,894,823,905.
    Exports rose 7.42 percent to $3,762,107,727. Imports rose 10.89 percent to $8,132,716,178.
  • Trade with No. 2 New York City rose 6.47 percent to $5,118,961,607.
    Exports fell -7.32 percent to $1,430,745,017. Imports rose 13.00 percent to $3,688,216,590.
  • Trade with No. 3 Chicago rose 13.09 percent to $4,466,532,309.
    Exports rose 13.76 percent to $1,100,255,739. Imports rose 12.88 percent to $3,366,276,570.
  • Trade with No. 4 San Francisco fell -5.51 percent to $4,408,110,000.
    Exports fell -7.41 percent to $2,115,901,984. Imports fell -3.70 percent to $2,292,208,016.
  • Trade with No. 5 Seattle rose 30.32 percent to $4,136,084,256.
    Exports rose 38.33 percent to $2,105,112,442. Imports rose 22.94 percent to $2,030,971,814.

Through March, 10 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Japan while 35 had deficits. That compares with 8 surpluses and 37 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with Anchorage at $529,909,099, the largest deficit was with Los Angeles at $-4,370,608,451.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to Japan by value through March were aircraft; corn; medical instruments for surgeons, dentists, vets; medicine; and pork meat, fresh, frozen or chilled, respectively. They accounted for 26.19 percent of total exports to Japan.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Japan -- motor vehicles for transporting people; motor vehicle parts; printers, all types, parts; machinery, parts for semiconductor manufacturing; and self-propelled heavy construction machinery -- accounted for 41.80 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to Japan:

  • Aircraft rose 112.54 percent compared to last year to $1,898,256,237.
  • Corn rose 12.81 percent compared to last year to $871,372,271.
  • Medical instruments for surgeons, dentists, vets rose 1.54 percent compared to last year to $721,543,719.
  • Medicine rose 3.80 percent compared to last year to $516,447,546.
  • Pork meat, fresh, frozen or chilled rose 15.77 percent compared to last year to $502,304,310.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from Japan

  • Motor vehicles for transporting people rose 21.52 percent compared to last year to $10,292,283,352.
  • Motor vehicle parts rose 27.39 percent compared to last year to $2,581,592,855.
  • Printers, all types, parts fell -9.84 percent compared to last year to $1,070,675,325.
  • Machinery, parts for semiconductor manufacturing fell -21.08 percent compared to last year to $980,275,697.
  • Self-propelled heavy construction machinery rose 63.62 percent compared to last year to $768,510,825.

In the latest annual figures available, Japan recorded $48,424,632,035 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Chicago and Seattle. Total U.S. exports to Japan were $66,168,328,820 and imports from Japan were $128,811,280,219. The U.S. deficit with Japan was $-62,642,951,399.
