Jordan’s trade rose to $705,032,790 through March

Jordan’s trade with the United States rose to $705,032,790 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 23.24 percent above its total trade during the same time period last year. Jordan’s exports increased 30.33 percent while imports rose 13.97 percent. The U.S. surplus with Jordan was $140,231,582.

Through March, Jordan’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 New York City, No. 2 Atlanta/Savannah, No. 3 New Orleans, No. 4 Houston and No. 5 San Francisco compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 New York City, No. 2 Atlanta/Savannah, No. 3 Port Arthur, Texas, No. 4 Houston and No. 5 Jacksonville/Tampa. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 39.60 percent of Jordan’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 13.27 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Jordan,:

  • Trade with No. 1 New York City rose 9.49 percent to $206,725,756.
    Exports rose 1.28 percent to $73,388,826. Imports rose 14.60 percent to $133,336,930.
  • Trade with No. 2 Atlanta/savannah rose 47.10 percent to $115,873,202.
    Exports rose 70.95 percent to $26,945,947. Imports rose 41.13 percent to $88,927,255.
  • Trade with No. 3 New Orleans rose 1,608.14 percent to $92,690,308.
    Exports rose 1,884.42 percent to $91,195,242. Imports rose 79.95 percent to $1,495,066.
  • Trade with No. 4 Houston fell -2.56 percent to $45,817,502.
    Exports fell -0.98 percent to $42,147,546. Imports fell -17.70 percent to $3,669,956.
  • Trade with No. 5 San Francisco rose 83.64 percent to $43,917,933.
    Exports rose 83.47 percent to $43,268,755. Imports rose 95.46 percent to $649,178.

Through March, 28 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Jordan while 8 had deficits. That compares with 28 surpluses and 8 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with New Orleans at $89,700,176, the largest deficit was with Atlanta/Savannah at $-61,981,308.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to Jordan by value through March were motor vehicles for transporting people; oil, not crude; rice; motor vehicles for transporting goods; and military weapons, excluding pistols, respectively. They accounted for 52.59 percent of total exports to Jordan.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Jordan -- sweaters, pullovers, vest, knit or crocheted; women's or girls' suits, not knit; men's or boys' shirts, knitted or crocheted; women's or girls' suits, knit or crocheted; and t-shirts, tank tops, knit or crocheted -- accounted for 69.66 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to Jordan:

  • Women's or girls' suits, knit or crocheted rose 107.94 percent compared to last year to $27,119,030.
  • T-shirts, tank tops, knit or crocheted rose 50.29 percent compared to last year to $19,241,992.

In the latest annual figures available, Jordan recorded $572,061,941 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were New York City, Atlanta/Savannah, Houston, Norfolk and Los Angeles. Total U.S. exports to Jordan were $1,454,325,707 and imports from Jordan were $1,060,516,070. The U.S. surplus with Jordan was $393,809,637.
