Kuwait’s trade rose to $3,955,499,581 through March

Kuwait’s trade with the United States rose to $3,955,499,581 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 126.74 percent above its total trade during the same time period last year. Kuwait’s exports increased 5.21 percent while imports rose 192.77 percent. The U.S. deficit with Kuwait was $2,663,186,179.

Through March, Kuwait’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 New Orleans, No. 2 Houston, No. 3 New York City, No. 4 Jacksonville/Tampa and No. 5 Mobile compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Houston, No. 2 New Orleans, No. 3 New York City, No. 4 Los Angeles and No. 5 Jacksonville/Tampa. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 12.80 percent of Kuwait’s U.S. trade.. That compares to -50.25 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Kuwait,:

  • Trade with No. 1 New Orleans rose 337.87 percent to $1,878,798,186.
    Exports fell -49.52 percent to $14,499,254. Imports rose 365.66 percent to $1,864,298,932.
  • Trade with No. 2 Houston rose 78.79 percent to $1,294,806,211.
    Exports rose 59.69 percent to $108,386,852. Imports rose 80.76 percent to $1,186,419,359.
  • Trade with No. 3 New York City fell -46.49 percent to $114,761,244.
    Exports fell -46.16 percent to $114,285,312. Imports fell -78.31 percent to $475,932.
  • Trade with No. 4 Jacksonville/tampa rose 52.95 percent to $109,774,122.
    Exports rose 51.72 percent to $108,888,963. Imports rose to $885,159.
  • Trade with No. 5 Mobile rose 23,565.10 percent to $108,573,114.
    Exports fell -63.50 percent to $91,825. Imports rose 52,259.88 percent to $108,481,289.

Through March, 25 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Kuwait while 10 had deficits. That compares with 32 surpluses and 4 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with New York City at $113,809,380, the largest deficit was with New Orleans at $-1,849,799,678.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to Kuwait by value through March were motor vehicles for transporting people; motor vehicles for transporting goods; seamless iron tubes and pipes; bombs, grenades, cartridges, parts; and misc. chemical reaction initiators, accelerators, respectively. They accounted for 43.89 percent of total exports to Kuwait.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Kuwait -- oil; nitrogenous fertilizers; oil, not crude; imports of returned exports; and misc. chemical reaction initiators, accelerators -- accounted for 99.96 percent of all inbound shipments.

  • Oil rose 198.78 percent compared to last year to $3,213,210,285.
  • Nitrogenous fertilizers rose 65.19 percent compared to last year to $81,226,101.
  • Oil, not crude rose compared to last year to $7,296,830.
  • Imports of returned exports rose 34.31 percent compared to last year to $5,930,629.
  • Misc. chemical reaction initiators, accelerators fell -11.16 percent compared to last year to $371,925.

In the latest annual figures available, Kuwait recorded $1,744,489,000 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were New Orleans, Houston, New York City, Jacksonville/Tampa and Baltimore. Total U.S. exports to Kuwait were $2,727,324,643 and imports from Kuwait were $7,808,733,355. The U.S. deficit with Kuwait was $-5,081,408,712.
