Luxembourg’s trade rose to $697,665,126 through March

Luxembourg’s trade with the United States rose to $697,665,126 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 30.86 percent above its total trade during the same time period last year. Luxembourg’s exports increased 51.37 percent while imports dropped -17.46 percent. The U.S. surplus with Luxembourg was $435,305,768.

Through March, Luxembourg’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 Seattle, No. 2 Atlanta/Savannah, No. 3 New York City, No. 4 Los Angeles and No. 5 Chicago compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Mobile, No. 2 New York City, No. 3 Atlanta/Savannah, No. 4 Los Angeles and No. 5 Houston. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 36.44 percent of Luxembourg’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 4.27 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Luxembourg,:

  • Trade with No. 1 Seattle rose 10,492.89 percent to $180,565,051.
    Exports rose 13,491.62 percent to $179,516,380. Imports rose 173.23 percent to $1,048,671.
  • Trade with No. 2 Atlanta/savannah rose 173.23 percent to $176,713,310.
    Exports rose 231.76 percent to $168,242,953. Imports fell -39.33 percent to $8,470,357.
  • Trade with No. 3 New York City fell -35.85 percent to $71,687,707.
    Exports rose 45.17 percent to $64,096,640. Imports fell -88.77 percent to $7,591,067.
  • Trade with No. 4 Los Angeles fell -14.18 percent to $41,823,112.
    Exports fell -20.79 percent to $34,871,228. Imports rose 47.52 percent to $6,951,884.
  • Trade with No. 5 Chicago rose 29.89 percent to $40,547,485.
    Exports rose 28.63 percent to $35,119,278. Imports rose 38.72 percent to $5,428,207.

Through March, 17 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Luxembourg while 20 had deficits. That compares with 17 surpluses and 19 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with Seattle at $178,467,709, the largest deficit was with Portland, Maine at $-28,923,266.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to Luxembourg by value through March were aircraft; paintings, drawings and other artwork; synthetic rubber, including butadiene; non-woven fabric; and bombs, grenades, cartridges, parts, respectively. They accounted for 84.06 percent of total exports to Luxembourg.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Luxembourg -- imports of returned exports; sheet piling, welded angles etc of iron or st 7301; angles, shapes, sections, iron and nonalloy steel; non-woven fabric; and taps, cocks and valves for pipes, tanks -- accounted for 63.69 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to Luxembourg:

  • Aircraft rose 296.03 percent compared to last year to $402,619,346.
  • Paintings, drawings and other artwork rose 82.05 percent compared to last year to $36,510,902.
  • Synthetic rubber, including butadiene fell -6.42 percent compared to last year to $16,805,708.
  • Non-woven fabric rose 80.13 percent compared to last year to $10,185,021.
  • Bombs, grenades, cartridges, parts rose 677.00 percent compared to last year to $10,045,974.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from Luxembourg

  • Imports of returned exports fell -41.91 percent compared to last year to $37,358,430.
  • Sheet Piling, Welded Angles Etc of Iron or St 7301 rose 7.50 percent compared to last year to $24,290,171.
  • Angles, shapes, sections, iron and nonalloy steel fell -5.68 percent compared to last year to $10,672,945.
  • Non-woven fabric fell -37.89 percent compared to last year to $6,151,979.
  • Taps, cocks and valves for pipes, tanks fell -8.62 percent compared to last year to $5,081,062.

In the latest annual figures available, Luxembourg recorded $533,150,449 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were Seattle, Atlanta/Savannah, New York City, Chicago and Houston. Total U.S. exports to Luxembourg were $1,585,178,949 and imports from Luxembourg were $497,281,660. The U.S. surplus with Luxembourg was $1,087,897,289.
