Macao’s trade rose to $92,753,317 through March

Macao’s trade with the United States rose to $92,753,317 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s -2.32 percent below its total trade during the same time period last year. Macao’s exports decreased -0.68 percent while imports dropped -6.37 percent. The U.S. surplus with Macao was $41,638,201.

Through March, Macao’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 Los Angeles, No. 2 New York City, No. 3 Low Value Shipments, No. 4 Cleveland and No. 5 San Francisco compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Los Angeles, No. 2 San Francisco, No. 3 Cleveland, No. 4 Low Value Shipments and No. 5 New York City. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 43.24 percent of Macao’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 46.63 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Macao,:

  • Trade with No. 1 Los Angeles fell -13.48 percent to $22,156,404.
    Exports fell -0.28 percent to $15,678,451. Imports fell -34.49 percent to $6,477,953.
  • Trade with No. 2 New York City rose 9.70 percent to $11,950,918.
    Exports rose 9.07 percent to $9,837,718. Imports rose 12.75 percent to $2,113,200.
  • Trade with No. 3 Low Value Shipments rose 0.07 percent to $11,598,797.
    Exports rose 0.24 percent to $11,412,640. Imports fell -9.35 percent to $186,157.
  • Trade with No. 4 Cleveland fell -24.67 percent to $10,905,240.
    Exports fell -29.50 percent to $7,826,907. Imports fell -8.77 percent to $3,078,333.
  • Trade with No. 5 San Francisco fell -45.00 percent to $8,144,064.
    Exports fell -46.84 percent to $7,423,159. Imports fell -14.38 percent to $720,905.

Through March, 17 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Macao while 16 had deficits. That compares with 16 surpluses and 17 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with Low Value Shipments at $11,226,483, the largest deficit was with Philadelphia at $-2,277,940.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to Macao by value through March were low value shipments; aircraft; video games, other games; landline, cellular phone equipment; and jewelry, parts, respectively. They accounted for 60.06 percent of total exports to Macao.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Macao -- anitbiotics; imports of returned exports; printers, all types, parts; men's or boys' underwear; and sweaters, pullovers, vest, knit or crocheted -- accounted for 49.83 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to Macao:

  • Low value shipments rose 0.24 percent compared to last year to $11,412,640.
  • Aircraft fell -20.48 percent compared to last year to $11,283,582.
  • Video games, other games fell -20.19 percent compared to last year to $6,517,284.
  • Landline, cellular phone equipment fell -37.30 percent compared to last year to $6,076,352.
  • Jewelry, parts rose 0.25 percent compared to last year to $5,070,359.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from Macao

  • Anitbiotics rose 67.36 percent compared to last year to $3,621,328.
  • Imports of returned exports rose 99.68 percent compared to last year to $2,741,935.
  • Printers, all types, parts rose 3.71 percent compared to last year to $2,172,747.
  • Men's or boys' underwear rose 12.04 percent compared to last year to $2,162,145.
  • Sweaters, pullovers, vest, knit or crocheted fell -5.55 percent compared to last year to $2,036,717.

In the latest annual figures available, Macao recorded $94,953,941 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were Los Angeles, New York City, Cleveland, San Francisco and Low Value Shipments. Total U.S. exports to Macao were $290,751,145 and imports from Macao were $113,074,645. The U.S. surplus with Macao was $177,676,500.
