New Zealand’s trade rose to $1,694,498,828 through March

New Zealand’s trade with the United States rose to $1,694,498,828 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 2.56 percent above its total trade during the same time period last year. New Zealand’s exports decreased -6.02 percent while imports rose 12.89 percent. The U.S. surplus with New Zealand was $1,579,416.

Through March, New Zealand’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 Los Angeles, No. 2 Philadelphia, No. 3 Seattle, No. 4 San Francisco and No. 5 Atlanta/Savannah compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Los Angeles, No. 2 Philadelphia, No. 3 Seattle, No. 4 Honolulu and No. 5 San Francisco. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 32.01 percent of New Zealand’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 28.71 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with New Zealand,:

  • Trade with No. 1 Los Angeles rose 12.38 percent to $437,506,923.
    Exports rose 6.99 percent to $246,369,437. Imports rose 20.18 percent to $191,137,486.
  • Trade with No. 2 Philadelphia rose 14.70 percent to $322,501,925.
    Exports rose 35.73 percent to $18,589,624. Imports rose 13.62 percent to $303,912,301.
  • Trade with No. 3 Seattle rose 10.74 percent to $216,796,757.
    Exports rose 5.79 percent to $181,293,775. Imports rose 45.49 percent to $35,502,982.
  • Trade with No. 4 San Francisco rose 21.82 percent to $179,871,137.
    Exports rose 6.12 percent to $47,883,313. Imports rose 28.72 percent to $131,987,824.
  • Trade with No. 5 Atlanta/savannah rose 28.83 percent to $126,938,836.
    Exports rose 40.99 percent to $91,850,467. Imports rose 5.09 percent to $35,088,369.

Through March, 20 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with New Zealand while 21 had deficits. That compares with 17 surpluses and 23 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with Seattle at $145,790,793, the largest deficit was with Philadelphia at $-285,322,677.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to New Zealand by value through March were aircraft; low value shipments; motor vehicles for transporting people; lactose, caramel, misc. sugars; and petroleum products, respectively. They accounted for 42.31 percent of total exports to New Zealand.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from New Zealand -- frozen beef from cows; casein, caseinates, derivatives; whey, misc. milk products; sheep or goat meat, fresh, chilled or frozen; and wine -- accounted for 55.61 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to New Zealand:

  • Aircraft fell -36.85 percent compared to last year to $236,797,728.
  • Low value shipments rose 11.88 percent compared to last year to $53,538,315.
  • Motor vehicles for transporting people rose 73.82 percent compared to last year to $29,751,267.
  • Lactose, caramel, misc. sugars rose 117.67 percent compared to last year to $20,962,053.
  • Petroleum products rose 5.56 percent compared to last year to $17,727,267.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from New Zealand

  • Frozen beef from cows rose 10.58 percent compared to last year to $187,508,087.
  • Casein, caseinates, derivatives rose 17.57 percent compared to last year to $83,309,986.
  • Whey, misc. milk products rose 57.70 percent compared to last year to $80,401,269.
  • Sheep or goat meat, fresh, chilled or frozen rose 3.23 percent compared to last year to $66,463,280.
  • Wine rose 21.00 percent compared to last year to $53,068,173.

In the latest annual figures available, New Zealand recorded $1,652,167,797 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco and Honolulu. Total U.S. exports to New Zealand were $3,571,104,389 and imports from New Zealand were $3,159,802,464. The U.S. surplus with New Zealand was $411,301,925.
