Saudi Arabia’s trade rose to $18,638,133,172 through March

Saudi Arabia’s trade with the United States rose to $18,638,133,172 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 47.04 percent above its total trade during the same time period last year. Saudi Arabia’s exports increased 50.80 percent while imports rose 45.88 percent. The U.S. deficit with Saudi Arabia was $9,568,467,150.

Through March, Saudi Arabia’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 New Orleans, No. 2 Houston, No. 3 San Francisco, No. 4 Port Arthur, Texas and No. 5 Los Angeles compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 New Orleans, No. 2 Houston, No. 3 San Francisco, No. 4 Port Arthur, Texas and No. 5 Los Angeles. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 35.92 percent of Saudi Arabia’s U.S. trade.. That compares to -7.57 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Saudi Arabia,:

  • Trade with No. 1 New Orleans rose 14.17 percent to $5,007,672,193.
    Exports fell -36.28 percent to $133,367,688. Imports rose 16.70 percent to $4,874,304,505.
  • Trade with No. 2 Houston rose 118.16 percent to $4,444,257,719.
    Exports rose 104.64 percent to $734,877,043. Imports rose 121.05 percent to $3,709,380,676.
  • Trade with No. 3 San Francisco rose 38.33 percent to $1,824,173,441.
    Exports rose 12.82 percent to $62,482,385. Imports rose 39.45 percent to $1,761,691,056.
  • Trade with No. 4 Port Arthur, Texas rose 58.84 percent to $1,513,245,932.
    Exports rose 46,808.14 percent to $3,584,720. Imports rose 58.47 percent to $1,509,661,212.
  • Trade with No. 5 Los Angeles rose 13.81 percent to $923,590,786.
    Exports fell -0.43 percent to $121,449,961. Imports rose 16.33 percent to $802,140,825.

Through March, 25 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Saudi Arabia while 14 had deficits. That compares with 26 surpluses and 14 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with Jacksonville/Tampa at $699,638,442, the largest deficit was with New Orleans at $-4,740,936,817.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to Saudi Arabia by value through March were motor vehicles for transporting people; aircraft; parts for heavy machinery; aircraft engines, parts; and misc. chemical reaction initiators, accelerators, respectively. They accounted for 48.91 percent of total exports to Saudi Arabia.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Saudi Arabia -- oil; acyclic alcohols; scrap of precious metal; oil, not crude; and nitrogenous fertilizers -- accounted for 98.61 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to Saudi Arabia:

  • Motor vehicles for transporting people rose 46.32 percent compared to last year to $1,213,706,851.
  • Aircraft rose 739.07 percent compared to last year to $749,152,408.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from Saudi Arabia

  • Oil rose 46.29 percent compared to last year to $13,618,697,472.
  • Acyclic alcohols fell -32.79 percent compared to last year to $79,353,102.
  • Scrap of precious metal rose 2,158,789.30 percent compared to last year to $76,640,570.
  • Oil, not crude rose 562.57 percent compared to last year to $71,762,532.
  • Nitrogenous fertilizers fell -39.54 percent compared to last year to $61,185,712.

In the latest annual figures available, Saudi Arabia recorded $12,675,200,490 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were New Orleans, Houston, San Francisco, Port Arthur, Texas and Los Angeles. Total U.S. exports to Saudi Arabia were $13,819,521,040 and imports from Saudi Arabia were $47,476,329,712. The U.S. deficit with Saudi Arabia was $-33,656,808,672.
