South Korea’s trade rose to $25,150,256,689 through March

South Korea’s trade with the United States rose to $25,150,256,689 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 9.15 percent above its total trade during the same time period last year. South Korea’s exports increased 10.80 percent while imports rose 7.82 percent. The U.S. deficit with South Korea was $2,345,946,889.

Through March, South Korea’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 Los Angeles, No. 2 Atlanta/Savannah, No. 3 San Francisco, No. 4 New York City and No. 5 Dallas compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 Los Angeles, No. 2 San Francisco, No. 3 New York City, No. 4 Chicago and No. 5 Atlanta/Savannah. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 81.13 percent of South Korea’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 65.95 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with South Korea,:

  • Trade with No. 1 Los Angeles rose 1.65 percent to $5,765,644,484.
    Exports fell -4.47 percent to $2,578,323,078. Imports rose 7.21 percent to $3,187,321,406.
  • Trade with No. 2 Atlanta/savannah rose 26.53 percent to $2,156,820,073.
    Exports fell -0.51 percent to $426,665,062. Imports rose 35.62 percent to $1,730,155,011.
  • Trade with No. 3 San Francisco rose 4.75 percent to $2,129,484,704.
    Exports rose 25.25 percent to $1,404,112,271. Imports fell -20.45 percent to $725,372,433.
  • Trade with No. 4 New York City rose 3.68 percent to $1,942,346,043.
    Exports fell -3.16 percent to $1,296,159,514. Imports rose 20.80 percent to $646,186,529.
  • Trade with No. 5 Dallas rose 26.57 percent to $1,890,624,171.
    Exports rose 131.82 percent to $1,061,205,229. Imports fell -19.94 percent to $829,418,942.

Through March, 17 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with South Korea while 28 had deficits. That compares with 16 surpluses and 29 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with San Francisco at $678,739,838, the largest deficit was with Atlanta/Savannah at $-1,303,489,949.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to South Korea by value through March were electronic integrated circuits; aircraft; machinery, parts for semiconductor manufacturing; scrap iron, steel; and corn, respectively. They accounted for 31.42 percent of total exports to South Korea.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from South Korea -- motor vehicles for transporting people; landline, cellular phone equipment; motor vehicle parts; electronic integrated circuits; and rubber tires -- accounted for 42.39 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to South Korea:

  • Electronic integrated circuits rose 168.94 percent compared to last year to $1,039,697,541.
  • Aircraft rose 160.26 percent compared to last year to $996,002,454.
  • Machinery, parts for semiconductor manufacturing rose 112.49 percent compared to last year to $898,717,881.
  • Scrap iron, steel rose 27.94 percent compared to last year to $400,322,438.
  • Corn fell -42.44 percent compared to last year to $248,070,217.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from South Korea

  • Motor vehicles for transporting people rose 33.24 percent compared to last year to $2,590,950,083.
  • Landline, cellular phone equipment fell -17.19 percent compared to last year to $1,476,397,160.
  • Motor vehicle parts rose 21.31 percent compared to last year to $852,602,028.
  • Electronic integrated circuits fell -41.28 percent compared to last year to $508,111,431.
  • Rubber tires rose 16.74 percent compared to last year to $400,328,765.

In the latest annual figures available, South Korea recorded $23,042,290,128 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, New York City and Dallas. Total U.S. exports to South Korea were $43,505,004,799 and imports from South Korea were $56,635,533,100. The U.S. deficit with South Korea was $-13,130,528,301.
