Swaziland’s trade rose to $20,892,738 through March

Swaziland’s trade with the United States rose to $20,892,738 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s -31.42 percent below its total trade during the same time period last year. Swaziland’s exports decreased -11.69 percent while imports dropped -37.99 percent. The U.S. deficit with Swaziland was $7,453,544.

Through March, Swaziland’s top U.S. Customs districts for total imports and exports were No. 1 New York City, No. 2 Charleston, No. 3 Atlanta/Savannah, No. 4 Houston and No. 5 Philadelphia compared to last year when the top spots were held by No. 1 New York City, No. 2 Charleston, No. 3 Atlanta/Savannah, No. 4 San Francisco and No. 5 New Orleans. In the current time period, the top five accounted for 27.81 percent of Swaziland’s U.S. trade.. That compares to 86.36 percent for the nation’s top five Customs districts during the same time period.

Taking a closer look at the leading U.S. gateways for U.S. trade with Swaziland,:

  • Trade with No. 1 New York City fell -50.82 percent to $6,915,730.
    Exports fell -59.15 percent to $1,720,902. Imports fell -47.26 percent to $5,194,828.
  • Trade with No. 2 Charleston fell -27.45 percent to $4,721,853.
    Exports rose 1,003.84 percent to $451,668. Imports fell -33.97 percent to $4,270,185.
  • Trade with No. 3 Atlanta/savannah fell -34.84 percent to $2,147,287.
    Exports fell -66.44 percent to $217,445. Imports fell -27.11 percent to $1,929,842.
  • Trade with No. 4 Houston rose 75.44 percent to $1,484,243.
    Exports rose 5,190.91 percent to $634,909. Imports rose 1.84 percent to $849,334.
  • Trade with No. 5 Philadelphia rose 671.10 percent to $1,077,475.
    Exports rose 1,214.49 percent to $1,077,475. Imports fell -100.00 percent to $0.

Through March, 16 Customs districts posted trade surpluses with Swaziland while 14 had deficits. That compares with 10 surpluses and 17 deficits for the same period one year ago. The top surplus was with Philadelphia at $1,077,475, the largest deficit was with Charleston at $-3,818,517.

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade with the world increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700; imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five countries so far this year, by value, are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

The top five U.S. exports to Swaziland by value through March were orthopedic appliances, artificial body parts; medicine; machinery for sorting minerals, ores; exports of charitable items, returned as imports; and harvesting machinery for poultry, respectively. They accounted for 49.92 percent of total exports to Swaziland.

The value of the top five U.S. imports from Swaziland -- sweaters, pullovers, vest, knit or crocheted; women's or girls' suits, not knit; men's or boys' suits, not knit; men's or boys' shirts, knitted or crocheted; and men's or boys' suits, knit or crocheted -- accounted for 85.38 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at U.S. exports to Swaziland:

  • Orthopedic appliances, artificial body parts rose 1,609.05 percent compared to last year to $1,246,086.
  • Medicine rose compared to last year to $696,540.
  • Machinery for sorting minerals, ores rose 1,123.85 percent compared to last year to $500,774.
  • Exports of charitable items, returned as imports rose 15.60 percent compared to last year to $491,650.
  • Harvesting machinery for poultry fell -53.86 percent compared to last year to $419,177.

Looking more closely at U.S. imports from Swaziland

  • Sweaters, pullovers, vest, knit or crocheted fell -35.92 percent compared to last year to $3,985,573.
  • Women's or girls' suits, not knit fell -29.68 percent compared to last year to $3,453,090.
  • Men's or boys' suits, not knit fell -35.13 percent compared to last year to $2,369,699.
  • Men's or boys' shirts, knitted or crocheted rose 96.88 percent compared to last year to $1,831,249.
  • Men's or boys' suits, knit or crocheted fell -51.52 percent compared to last year to $461,941.

In the latest annual figures available, Swaziland recorded $30,464,045 in trade with the United States. At year’s end, its top five Customs districts were New York City, Charleston, Atlanta/Savannah, San Francisco and Phoenix/Nogales. Total U.S. exports to Swaziland were $20,232,988 and imports from Swaziland were $89,274,715. The U.S. deficit with Swaziland was $-69,041,727.
