Anchorage’s trade decreases -0.46 percent through March

Anchorage’s trade with the world rose to $7,134,648,595 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s -0.46 percent decreases the Customs district’s total trade during the same time period last year. The district’s exports increased 5.46 percent while imports dropped -6.16 percent.

Through March the district’s top trade partners were No. 1 China, No. 2 Japan, No. 3 South Korea, No. 4 Malaysia and No. 5 Taiwan. Through the first three months of the last year, top five spots were held by China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan, respectively.

Taking a closer look at the leading trade partners with Anchorage:

  • No.1 China’s trade fell -9.56 percent to $2,143,056,435.
    Exports fell -0.00 percent to $1,082,369,207. Imports fell -17.59 percent to $1,060,687,228.
  • No.2 Japan’s trade rose 6.77 percent to $1,030,656,551.
    Exports fell -3.36 percent to $780,282,825. Imports rose 58.59 percent to $250,373,726.
  • No.3 South Korea’s trade rose 17.75 percent to $810,143,422.
    Exports rose 43.83 percent to $542,963,388. Imports fell -13.95 percent to $267,180,034.
  • No.4 Malaysia’s trade fell -25.12 percent to $646,936,183.
    Exports fell -35.99 percent to $84,618,740. Imports fell -23.16 percent to $562,317,443.
  • No.5 Taiwan’s trade rose 27.11 percent to $550,097,568.
    Exports rose 17.87 percent to $156,156,784. Imports rose 31.18 percent to $393,940,784.

Anchorage’s top five trading partners through March accounted for 72.62 percent of its trade with the world. The U.S. average for the same period was 52.49 percent.

Anchorage had trade surpluses with 78 countries and deficits with 48 through March. That compares with 73 surpluses and 47 deficits for the same period one year earlier. The top three surpluses through March of this year were with Japan, $529,909,099; Hong Kong, $342,549,952; and South Korea, $275,783,354. The top three deficits were with Malaysia ($477,698,703), Thailand ($243,360,180) and Taiwan ($237,784,000).

Meanwhile, total U.S. trade increased to $934,379,177,983, up 8.63 percent compared to the same period last year. The nation’s exports climbed 3.54 percent to $30,467,217,700 as imports rose 5.09 percent to $43,800,507,934. The nation’s top five trade districts so far this year, by value, are New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Detroit and Laredo. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

Anchorage’s top five exports by value through March were aircraft; electronic integrated circuits; frozen fish; fish fillets, chilled or frozen; and medical instruments for surgeons, dentists, vets, in that order. Those accounted for 55.58 percent of its total outbound trade. The value of the district’s top five imports, electronic integrated circuits, computers, imports of returned exports and landline, cellular phone equipmentcomputer parts and , accounted for 54.31 percent of all inbound shipments.

Looking more closely at Anchorage exports:

  • Aircraft rose 118.80 percent compared to last year to $828,242,312.
  • Electronic integrated circuits fell -14.55 percent compared to last year to $697,585,806.
  • Frozen fish rose 21.21 percent compared to last year to $289,064,842.
  • Fish fillets, chilled or frozen fell -9.24 percent compared to last year to $138,319,903.
  • Medical instruments for surgeons, dentists, vets fell -37.56 percent compared to last year to $109,638,395.

On the import side:

  • Electronic integrated circuits fell -19.74 percent compared to last year to $685,158,035.
  • Computers fell -37.76 percent compared to last year to $406,799,206.
  • Imports of returned exports rose 18.97 percent compared to last year to $291,327,765.
  • Landline, cellular phone equipment rose 12.22 percent compared to last year to $288,437,110.
  • Computer parts rose 30.66 percent compared to last year to $187,570,949.

Last year the Anchorage district posted total trade with the world of $30,544,297,577. The district’s surplus was $243,221,569. At year end, the region’s top five partners were China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan. Exports totaled $15,393,759,573 and imports came to $15,150,538,004.
