St. Albans, Vt.’s trade increases 7.34 percent through March

St. Albans, Vt.’s trade with the world rose to $3,025,355,954 through the first three months of 2012, according to a WorldCity analysis of the latest U.S. Census Bureau data. That’s 7.34 percent increases the Customs district’s total trade during the same time period last year. The district’s exports increased 14.84 percent while imports rose 4.64 percent.

Through March the district’s top trade partners were No. 1 Canada, No. 2 China, No. 3 Germany, No. 4 United Kingdom and No. 5 Belgium. Through the first three months of the last year, top five spots were held by Canada, China, Germany, United Kingdom and France, respectively.

Taking a closer look at the leading trade partners with St. Albans, Vt.:

  • No.1 Canada’s trade rose 8.23 percent to $2,799,999,816.
    Exports rose 19.62 percent to $798,221,215. Imports rose 4.27 percent to $2,001,778,601.
  • No.2 China’s trade rose 14.43 percent to $54,943,521.
    Exports rose 40.87 percent to $7,958,597. Imports rose 10.90 percent to $46,984,924.
  • No.3 Germany’s trade fell -17.50 percent to $26,703,502.

St. Albans, Vt.’s top five trading partners through March accounted for 96.17 percent of its trade with the world. The U.S. average for the same period was 52.49 percent.

St. Albans, Vt. had trade surpluses with 20 countries and deficits with 64 through March. That compares with 25 surpluses and 65 deficits for the same period one year earlier. The nation’s top five trade districts so far this year, by value, are New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Detroit and Laredo. The overall trade deficit was $-171,264,242,143, up compared to the same period of last year when the deficit was $-157,930,951,909.

St. Albans, Vt.’s top five exports by value through March were electronic integrated circuits; aircraft; printed circuits; paper and paperboard, coated with kaolin; and medical instruments for surgeons, dentists, vets, in that order. Those accounted for 55.07 percent of its total outbound trade. The value of the district’s top five imports, aircraft, electronic integrated circuits, petroleum gases, other gaseous hydrocarbons and oil, not crudeaircraft engines, parts and , accounted for 52.63 percent of all inbound shipments.
