Annual Report: No. 21 Angola- Mutual benefits

July 6th, 2006

Houston and Angola are deepening commercial ties – and both are seeing improved trade as a result.

When Angola was searching for a site for its second consulate in the United States, it chose Houston. When the country’s capital city of Luanda entered into a sister-city relationship with a U.S. city, it chose Houston.

The lure of Houston’s energy-oriented economy and its strategic location weren’t lost on the African nation. And now, with Angola’s oil-driven economy growing at more than 20 percent, both traders are benefiting from the ties.

Houston was the second most important Customs district for trade with Angola, handling some $2 billion in commerce. Not surprisingly, imports of crude oil reached $1.2 billion for a gain of 222 percent in dollar value.

Imports of refined oil from Angola fell nearly 28 percent, but petroleum gas imports jumped almost 500 percent to nearly $40 million.

Increased crude oil demand and higher oil prices helped imports from Angola jump nearly 173 percent, but Houston exports also posted their own 62 percent jump. With oil money spurring new production and exploration in Angola by companies like Chevron and ExxonMobil, Houston exports of machinery parts and pipelines all rose.

Some $32 million of new military helicopters also left through the Houston Customs District and headed for Angola in 2005.

In 2000, Sonair, a subsidiary of government energy company Sonangol, launched a non-stop charter service between Houston and Angola, primarily for oil executives and oil-related cargo.
