Annual Report: No. 16 France- Outpaced by oil-rich nations

July 6th, 2006

Houston’s trade with France is growing – but not as fast as the Customs district’s commerce with energy-producing countries.

Despite solid growth in trade between France and the Houston in 2005, the European country lost ground to oil producing countries.

Trade between France and the Houston-Galveston Customs District grew nearly 28 percent behind a 170 percent hike in the value of refined oil from France. However, major crude oil producing nations posted even higher overall growth rates with the Houston area. As a result, France fell from No. 11 on Houston’s Top Trade Partner list to 16.

Imports of French-made industrial items, including tractors, seamless iron tubes and pipes and self-propelled heavy construction machinery, posted double-digit growth.

Imports of rum, gin, vodka and other liquors from France rose almost 39 percent to $66 million. Wine imports, which fall into a separate commodity category, rose from $28 million in 2004 to $30 million in 2005.

The top export leaving the Houston area was the same as the top import from France – refined oil. But Houston’s shipments slipped 31 percent to close the year at $80 million.

Exports of automatic regulating instruments and parts through the Houston district skyrocketed more than 4,000 percent to $76 million. Some $71 million of those shipments were flown to France, compared with air shipments of $188,301 in that commodity category in 2004.

Exports of nuts, including pecans, which are a major crop for Texas, totaled more than $50 million.
