Annual Report: No. 15 Colombia- Coffee perks up trade

July 6th, 2006

Commerce with Colombia has jumped 33 percent thanks to gains in crude, coffee and coal.

Oil and chemicals dominate trade between Colombia and greater Houston, but coffee added some zip to shipments in 2005.

Trade between Houston and Colombia rose nearly 33 percent to $2.7 billion in 2005. Colombian crude oil accounted for $975 million of the exchange, a 62 percent increase over 2004. And imports of Colombian coffee perked up 67 percent to nearly $80 million.

In 2003, the Port of Houston was designated a coffee exchange port, joining New Orleans, New York and Miami as an approved delivery point for Coffee C futures contracts traded on the New York Board of Trade’s Coffee, Sugar & Cocoa Exchange.

The designation took effect at the beginning of 2005. The first Houston shipments placed on the exchange came in four containers from Colombia in early 2005.

Among other imports, coal and briquette shipments reached $18.5 million in 2005. There were no coal imports in 2004. Colombia is one of the world’s largest exporters of coal.

Houston’s exports to Colombia were dominated by petrochemicals and refined oil. The district also exported nearly $105 million in machinery parts, up 24 percent over 2004.

In 2004, the Port of Houston Authority boosted its trade lanes with Colombia by launching a new service to ports along the country’s Caribbean coast using the M/V Anne Boye. The vessel carries general cargo, including mining and other project-related equipment, as well as coal.
