Los Angeles poised to set U.S. trade record

December 11th, 2006

Los Angeles’ trade with the world rose $27 billion through the first nine months of the year, the nation’s No. 1 Customs district on target to close the year with more than $300 billion in international commerce.

That’s the biggest dollar gain among the nation’s Customs districts, although Los Angeles’ rate of growth of continues to lag behind the U.S. average of 13.7 percent.

Los Angeles is nearly certain to become the first U.S. Customs district to register more than $300 billion in annual trade.

Through the first nine months of the year, there was not significant movement in the rankings of Los Angeles’ top trade partners, although Singapore slipped ahead of Australia into the ninth most important position and Iraq moved up to the No. 18 spot, largely behind a leap in U.S. imports from the Middle Eastern nation.

China continues to be district’s most important partner, with almost $86 billion in trade through the first nine months. At No. 2, Japan’s trade with Los Angeles rose to $37.6 billion, followed by South Korea at $15.6 billion, Taiwan at $12.4 billion and Malaysia at $7.3 billion.

Los Angeles’ trade imbalance continued to widen, growing to $109 billion through the first three quarters of 2006 some $8 billion more than in the same nine months of 2005. China accounts for $61.4 billion of the overall deficit.
