Like many top multinational executives who make South Florida their home, Jim Hartenstein runs the Latin American operations for his company, Wendy’s International. And like many executives based here, Jim spends a lot of time on the road, or, rather, in the skies. In 2004, he tallied 31 business trips, spent 106 days away from home and logged an estimated 100,000 miles.
So we asked this “sky warrior”, Wendy’s Regional Vice President for Latin America, to share with us some thoughts about the challenges of keeping in touch, keeping in shape and keeping sane while constantly traveling. Here is what we learned.
*What are your 3 most frequent destinations? *
Columbus, Ohio (our corporate office), Puerto Rico and Mexico
What’s your favorite hotel?
Marriott/JW Marriott
*Any special reason? *
Consistent quality of rooms/service/lounge and they are located in most destinations.
Do you have a favorite restaurant when traveling?
Wendy’s everywhere, of course,—and La Valentina in Mexico City; Ajili Mojili and The Palm in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Barrigas in Juarez, Mexico; Hereford Grill in Caracas, Venezuela; Casa del Marisco in Panama City*{=mso-special-character: line-break}
What do you do to relax when you are away on business?*
I use the hotel gym.
If you had to spend a weekend away from home on business, which would be your preferred place to get stuck in?
San Juan, Puerto Rico
What airline do you prefer?
American
*What is your favorite airport? *
None of them.
*Favorite VIP lounge? *
American Admiral’s Clubs (or the old Pan Am Clipper Club in Rio)
Tech tally: Place an x by the items that you carry with you when traveling?
a) PDA X (International Blackberry for email and PDA)
b) Laptop X
c) Cell-phone X (ATT Wireless/Cingular; works in all my destinations)
d) Digital camera
d) Portable DVD player
e) MP3 player or Walkman *{=mso-special-character: line-break}
When traveling, what annoying problem or inconvenience drives you absolutely crazy?*
Flying three hours, then being told that we arrived early so the gate isn’t yet available (If the pilot knew just after take-off that we’d be arriving early, haven’t the destination operations people had the same amount of time to plan accordingly?) Also, why does it take the longest time to retreive checked luggage at Miami International Airport (I waited over 60 minutes two weeks ago), as compared to almost all other airports in the U.S. and outside the U.S.?
Good or bad idea to allow passengers use cell-phones on airplanes?
Bad idea. I don’t want to hear everyone else’s phone conversation (usually in a louder-than-necessary voice) when I’m trying to work, read or relax.
