The vast majority of goods exchanged between the United States and Paraguay were exports shipped from South Florida.
In all its major trade partnerships, South Florida’s commerce with Paraguay is the most lopsided.
In 2005, the South American country and the Miami Customs District exchanged $789 million in goods but only $5 million of it came via imports from Paraguay. Even at that, imports from the country were down a whopping 35 percent in 2005 when compared to trade results from a year earlier.
But South Florida exports to Paraguay were up so dramatically that overall trade for the year leaped more than 40 percent.
Computers led the export list, rising nearly 143 percent in value to total $295 million. They represented 38 percent of all South Florida exports to Paraguay. Nationwide, computers were the No. 1 commodity that the United States shipped to Paraguay last year.
The South American country relies on the United States for technology components and computer parts, semi-conductor parts and transmissions apparatus for cell phone joined computers at the top of the export list.
What happens between Paraguay and the Miami Customs District is an overwhelming indicator of what happens between Paraguay and the United States as a whole since South Florida is the most important point for goods to and from the South American country. New Orleans, the second most important Customs district handling shipments to and from Paraguay, posted just $44 million in trade with the South American country in 2005.
Last year, Paraguay and the United States had $947 million in bilateral trade, a jump of 39 percent from 2004.
Landlocked Paraguay, one of the least industrialized countries in South American, has a long tradition of cattle ranching and that was evident among South Florida imports. Saddles and other equine equipment joined bull semen and cattle embryos on the list of the Top 5 imports from Paraguay. Cigars and cigarettes led the list, accounting for just a quarter of all exports to South Florida at $1.3 million. That was down more than 65 percent from a year earlier.
