Mid-tier traders are on the move

Among South Florida’s top traders, the middle tier is marked by their geographic proximity to and their fast-growing commerce with the Miami Customs District. These are the countries that are poised to experience the biggest shakeups in their trade patterns thanks to new commodity opportunities and free trade agreements.

All but three of them are in the Americas. The United Kingdom, France and Italy are the exceptions. And all but three saw double-digit percentage growth in their trade with South Florida.

Guatemala’s trade grew only 3.8 percent while El Salvador and the United Kingdom each saw bilateral trade with Miami fall 1.1 percent. But for most of the Eleven to Watch, 2005 was a robust year for commerce. The Bahamas saw a whopping 43.3 percent leap in its exchange with the Miami Customs District. France posted 24.4 percent growth while Chile saw a 23.3 percent gain.

These are the countries that are tapping new export commodities. Peru, for example, could soon begin shipping citrus fruits to South Florida. In early May 2005, the U.S. Department of Agriculture authorized for the first time imports of grapefruit, limes, tangerines, oranges and tangelos from the South American country. This could open a new door for agriculturally rich Peru, which already has evolved into the world’s top grower of asparagus, much of which enters the United States through Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

But it’s not all about new imports. South Florida capitalized on export opportunities to one of these countries last year. The Miami Customs District’s exports to Argentina grew enough to add nearly $1 billion to South Florida’s trade surplus.

The European countries in this tier of traders are not only shipping to and from the Miami Customs District, they are using South Florida as a gateway to commerce in Latin America and the Caribbean.
