Third quarter trade results: Miami headed on pace for a strong 2006

China is on pace to become the top source of South Florida imports. Third quarter trade results show that China supplies 11 percent of all imports entering the Miami Customs District.

Through September, Miami imports from China rose 15 percent to $2.7 billion. Computers, computer parts, transmission apparatus for cellular phones, furniture and aluminum for construction were the top value shipments.

On the exports side, the good news for South Florida was that Miami exports to China showed signs of improvement. Although trade with China remains heavily one-sided in favor of imports from the Asian giant, exports giant rose nearly 71 percent in the first nine months of 2006 to hit $211 million.

Top exports were headed to China’s booming construction industry. The district saw a 179 percent increase in third quarter exports of scrap iron, a 115 percent jump in exports of aluminum and a 37 percent hike in copper exports.

China-bound shipments of regional jet parts were also on the rise, climbing to $4.4 million in the first nine months of the year, compared with less than $1 million in the same period of 2005. Surgical instruments to China were also on the rise, more than tripling to $6.2 million.

Although China trade grew, Brazil remained Customs district’s most important partner. The district and the South American country exchanged $4.9 billion-worth of goods from January through September, a leap of 26 percent when compared with the first nine months of 2006.

In 2006, a weaker dollar when compared to the Brazilian real helped boost South Florida exports of airplane parts, computers, computer parts and computer chips. Aircraft part exports leaped 7.5 percent for the period while computer part exports doubled.
