New York exports to Britain post a jump

The United Kingdom is likely to end 2006 as the New York Customs District’s third most important trading partner.
Third quarter trade results showed a 25 percent leap exports to the United Kingdom.
Commodities that saw a notable jump included gold, silver, platinum, jewelry and diamonds. Exports of paintings were also on the rise.
If the pace continues, the United Kingdom will displace Germany to become New York’s No. 3 district behind China and Japan.
At the end of September, year-to-date trade between New York and the United Kingdom was $16.7 billion, up significantly from the nearly $13 billion in the same period of 2005. Germany’s results for the same period were $14.7 billion.
Despite the European boost, China easily held onto its place as New York’s top trading partner with $23 billion in trade in the first nine months of the year up from $20 billion in 2005. Imports for the third quarter totaled $19.3 billion while exports hit $3.7 billion.
Top New York imports from China include computers, computer parts, women’s suits, suitcases and shoes.
Overall, New York’s most valuable import was refined petroleum, followed by diamonds and motor vehicles. Japan the district’s No. 2 trade partner saw its commerce with the Customs district increase 9 percent in the first nine months of the year.
Imports of motor vehicles reached $6.4 billion to account for 65 percent of all Japanese shipments to New York. Airplane parts and computer parts were also important imports from Japan.
