Romania and Bulgaria are the two latest nations hoping to join the 25-member European Union.
Both are relatively minor trade partners with the United States, Romania ranking No. 77 and Bulgaria at No. 95, according to WorldCity analysis of U.S. Census data.
The two former Eastern bloc communist nations would be the poorest nations to join the EU and both have to clear hurdles to gain admission, according to a BBC story .
The United States has trade deficits with both nations, and New York, Houston and Baltimore are all significant Customs districts for the two nations.
With Romania, the top imports into the United States are oil, fertilizers, iron tubes and aluminum; the top exports are charcoal, chicken meat, pork meat and tobacco.
Steel, iron, fertilizers and women’s suits are Bulgaria’s top imports into the United States while the top U.S. exports to the Eastern European nation are aircraft, coal and computers.
