1st Q: U.S. trade up slightly as import growth slows -- except with China

May 11th, 2007

U.S. trade with the world cooled in the first quarter of 2006, growing slightly more than 6 percent, according to WorldCity analysis of the Census data released Thursday.

Imports grew even more slowly, less than 4 percent, as the trade deficit fell from $190.2 billion through the first three months of 2005 to $180 billion for the first quarter of 2007.

The U.S. trade deficit with China continued to grow, up $9.6 billion, but the trade deficit with Canada, Germany, Brazil, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia all decreased more than $1 billion. In addition, the United Kingdom moved from a deficit to a surplus for the first time and the on-going surplus of the Netherlands increased.

Overall, the United States had a surplus with 124 nations and a deficit with 107 through the first three months of the year, compared to 114 in surplus and 113 in deficit the previous first quarter.

The fastest-growing trade partners through the first three months of the year were No. 2 China, No. 5 Germany, the No. 6 United Kingdom and No. 13 Singapore. Among top trade partners, No. 1 Canada, No. 16 Venezuela and No. 19 Saudi Arabia reported decreases.

Viewed by Customs district, No. 4 Houston continues to grow rapidly, the only top district to register growth at more than 20 percent. Its year over year increase was $7.2 billion. No. 6 New Orleans, No. 10 Savannah and No. 18 San Diego all grew more than 10 percent through the first three months of the year.

Three Customs districts dependent on U.S. trade with Canada all registered declines: Buffalo, Ogdensburg, N.Y., and Great Fall, Mont.
