U.S. trade with the world advanced at one of the slowest rates in years through the first six months of 2007, according to WorldCity analysis of the most recent U.S. Census data.
Overall trade increased 6.3 percent to a shade under $1.5 trillion, with exports rising 10.6 percent and imports rising just 3.8 percent. Because of that, the U.S. trade deficit fell 4.9 percent when compared to the first six months of 2006 though it did not fall below the level of 2005.
(Charts below showing top country trade, top Customs district trade.)
Through the first six months of 2006, trade grew at 13.5 percent, or more than twice the rate of 2007 and the rate the year before was 12.6 percent, also double the rate of 2007.
Among the Top 25 Customs districts, only the Southeastern ports of Houston, New Orleans, Savannah and Charleston grew at more than 10 percent through the first half of the year. Among Top 10 trade partners, only China grew more quickly than a 10 percent clip, while heavyweights Canada, Mexico and Japan all grew barely more than 2 percent each.
A weaker U.S. dollar and a weakening U.S. housing sector are significant factors.
