Annual Report: No. 19 Thailand - Gains seen in tech products

An eclectic exchange of goods marked trade between the United States and Thailand in 2005, with U.S. imports of electrical equipment for telephony posting a significant gain while U.S. exports of aircraft also jumped.

U.S. exports to Thailand last year reached $7.2 billion, a 13.6 percent gain from the year before. Computer chips – the top export to Thailand – rose nearly 16 percent to value $1.2 billion. Exports of computer components expanded even more, rising almost 26 percent to almost $600 million.

But it was U.S. exports of aircraft that really took flight, jumping 1,167 percent in value to end 2005 at $182.6 million. Aircraft parts, in turn, slipped 6 percent to $150 million.

U.S. imports from Thailand, meanwhile, rose to $19.9 billion, pushing up the U.S. trade deficit with that Asian country by 13 percent, to $12.7 billion.

The top import from Thailand was electrical equipment for line telephony. That cargo nearly doubled in value to $2.5 billion. The United States also imported $2.4 billion in computers, a 16 percent increase over results in 2004.

Color televisions and computer monitors were also important imports, climbing more than 9 percent in value to reach $989 million – closely tailed by jewelry, which valued $899 million, up slightly from $879 million in 2004.

Imports of Thai crustaceans were also up, jumping nearly 29 percent to end the year at $602 million. Thailand is a global exporter of farmed shrimp.

The United States posts double-digit growth in both exports to and imports from Thailand.
