New free-trade agreement sparks trade growth, despite falloff in beef shipments.

The United States wanted meat and wine and the Australians needed aircraft – and that exchange defined their trade in 2005.

The two countries posted more than $23 billion in overall trade in 2005, the year in which a free-trade pact took effect. Although total trade rose 6 percent from the year before, the commercial pact has been roundly criticized in Australia – as have similar free-trade agreements with Singapore and Thailand – because it has caused Australia’s trade deficit to widen.

Among the United States’ top 25 trade partners, Australia is one of the few with which the United States has a trade surplus. That surplus grew 26 percent in 2005 to end the year at $8.4 billion. U.S. exports to Australia valued $15.8 billion while imports totaled $7.3 billion.

Manufactured products made up 93 percent of exports, led by $687 million in aircraft and $554 million in machinery parts.

On the import side, beef, other meat and wine dominated the trade, carrying a combined value of nearly $1.9 billion.

Even though beef imports fell 17 percent to value $780 million in 2005, they still closed the year at the top of the import roster. The reason for the falloff? Asia. Australian beef is increasing being sent to closer-at-hand Asian nations, according to the Meat and Livestock Australia office in Washington D.C

While beef imports slipped, those of lamb and goat meat rose more than 18 percent to total nearly $313 million. U.S. imports of wine also rose, by 4.5 percent, to $765 million.
