Floriida law firm Becker & Poliakoff has named former Miami-Dade County Manager George Burgess as its chief operating officer.
The 53-year-old will “lead and supervise the firm’s administrative, management and operational strategy and structure including IT, human resources, administrative and financial functions,” the law firm said in a statement mid-June.
Burgess, who is not a lawyer, worked 28 years for Miami-Dade County in positions including budget director. As county manager for eight years, he oversaw an annual budget of about $7.6 billion and 30,000 employees.
He resigned after the March recall of former Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez.
Becker & Poliakoff has a budget of roughly $60 million and 400 employees, including more than 125 lawyers.
The firm began in South Florida in 1973 and now has 13 offices in Florida plus offices in New York, New Jersey, Nassau in the Bahamas and Prague in the Czech Republic.
It recently opened an office in Washington, D.C. to expand its government practice and lobbying efforts. That office is led by Omar Franco, former chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-FL., and by Clarence L. Williams, former chief of staff to then-U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek,D-FL.
