Miami International Airport set a new record for passenger traffic in the first quarter this year: 9.3 million travelers, up 6.1 percent from a year earlier.

Through March, MIA’S international traffic was up nearly 8 percent and passenger traffic more than 4 percent from the first quarter last year, the airport said in a statement.

Gains were spurred by American Airlines, the airport’s top carrier. On March 12, American boarded 39,283 passengers at MIA - a record day for their Miami hub.

March also saw the launch of new international routes by KLM and Iberia and expanded service to London and Florida by Delta and by other airlines, the airport said.

Further growth is expected too. In June, Europe's TAP Portugal will add four-times-a-week service from Lisbon and Arkefly twice-weekly service from Amsterdam. American Airlines also i seking to add routes to Brazil.

The increase comes after MIA last year set a new record for passenger traffic: 35.7 million, up 5.4 percent.
