Celistics, the Spain-based cellphone logistics company that runs operations from Miami, announced an agreement to assemble cellphones and other devices in Argentina’s southern Tierra del Fuego province.
Argentina’s Renacer Cooperative will provide the facilities, equipment and employees for the venture in the provincial capital of Ushuaia, commonly regarded as the world’s southern most city.
Renacer already has 140 people working in a 70,000-square-meter plant assembling goods in Ushuaia, Celistics said in a statement.
Argentina offers incentives for industrial production in its southern area. Under a 2009 law, it increased taxes on many high-tech goods including cellphones, except for those made in Tierra del Fuego. Miami-based Brightstar Corp., Alcatel-Lucent, LG, Samsung and others also have assembly operations there for goods sold in Argentina.
Celistics began doing business in Argentina in 2008 and last year, transported about 2.5 million cellphones and devices in the South American country, the statement said.
The company now operates in 15 countries worldwide, handling cellphone logistics largely for Spain’s telecom giant Telefonica in Latin America and now branching out to other customers.
Celistics posted revenues of $1.4 billion last year and expects solid growth this year too, Marketing Director Maxim Weitzman said at WorldCity’s Marketing Connections event March 18 in South Florida.
