The entrepreneur behind South Florida’s software pioneer Citrix Systems has launched a new venture to help companies address data sprawl."

VirtualWorks Group is based in Boca Raton and has an engineering lab in Norway. It grew out of the 2009 purchase of Norwegian data search firm InfoFinder AS. And it already has raised more than $8 million in funding, according to company founder and former IBM engineer Edward Iacobucci.

The new company aims to build a platform to index data, so that small- and mid-sized businesses can retrieve their digital files from any application, location or device. Faster retrieval should help businesses boost efficiency.

VirtualWorks plans to start selling its products this summer and later, to go public.

It now has about 15 employees in Boca Raton and plans to hire more, Iacobucci has said.

Iacobucci left IBM to co-found Citrix in 1989 and pioneered virtual and cloud computing there. He grew Citrix and helped take it public, then left in 2000 to develop new ventures.

Fort Lauderdale-based Citrix posted $490.8 million in revenue in the first quarter this year. That included $217.4 million from the Americas region, $133.3 million from the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, $40.2 million from the Asia-Pacific region and $99.7 million from its online services division, according to its financial reports.
