CROMA Pharmaceuticals, an Austria-based company that makes ophthalmology, orthopedics and aesthetics products, is opening a U.S. subsidiary in Fort Lauderdale and expects 10 employees there in the first year, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance announced.

CROMA was founded in Vienna in the 1970s and developed products for glaucoma and other eye ailments. In 2007, it bought the Swiss company Xcelens and the ophthalmic unit of France’s Corneal group. In 2008, it merged all divisions under the CROMA brand. It now has subsidiaries in Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Romania and Austria. The South Florida office is its first unit in the United States.

“We are pleased to have been able to assist CROMA in their location to Fort Lauderdale,” said David Coddington, vice president of business development for Broward County’s economic development group, now called the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.  “They are another great addition to the very strong life sciences cluster we have in Broward and South Florida.”
