Broward County’s board of county commissioners approved an update of  Port Everglades 20-Year Master/Vision Plan  that includes plans for new berth space and possible ferry service to Cuba.

Highlights of the updated plan for the Fort Lauderdale seaport include:

* Adding a 16.5-acre area to create four new cargo berths in the Southport Turning Notch

*  Refining U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ programs to dredge port channels to 50 feet from the current depth of 42 feet.

*  Ferry service to Cuba, when Washington allows such service,  possibly as an exemption to the U.S. embargo on the communist-led island similar to the current approval for charter flights.
