Manny Medina, chairman of data storage services company Terremark Worldwide., has been selected for this year’s top business award presented by The Beacon Council, Miami-Dade County’s economic development group.

The Jay Malina Award is given to the executive who has contributed the most to the growth of their industry in Miami-Dade. It is named for late founder and co-chair of the One Community One Goal project.

Medina was the driving force behind Terremark’s Network Access Point (NAP) of the Americas, one of the world’s most connected datacenter facilities and the unrivaled gateway for internet traffic between North America, Europe and Latin America. Since opening the NAP of the Americas in 2001, he has developed Terremark into a $2 billion information technology  infrastructure company that is widely recognized as a leader in the areas of cloud computing, cyber-security and disaster recovery, the Beacon Council said.

Verizon Communications agreed in January to buy Terremark for $1.4 billion, a 35 percent premium over Terremark’s share price at that time. Verizon had signed a deal last year for 25,000 square feet in Terremark’s data centers. It also has been selling Terremark’s hosting services.

Other Beacon Award winners this year include, for international trade, Goya Foods of Florida, and for the visitor industry, Oceania Cruises.

The ninth Annual Beacon Awards will be held May 11 at Jungle Island.
